Graphic Packaging International to invest £5m at Gateshead site in UK

Folding carton manufacturer Graphic Packaging International (GPI) is investing £5m at its Gateshead facility in the UK to meet increasing demand.

The investment, which is expected to create job opportunities for the North East, is a part of the company’s international growth plans.

At the Gateshead site, the company will install two new equipments to increase capacity and efficiency by up to 40 million sheets.

GPI North East plant manager Andrew Pybus said: “GPI’s Gateshead investment will enable the company to meet increased demand from retailers and private labels seeking more sustainable packaging options.

“We are driving innovation in cartonboard to cater for the global environmental trend and our North-East development is key to maintaining our success.

“It is an exciting time for the company and we are pleased to share this prosperity with the region by creating further employment opportunities.”

The two new machines planned to be installed at the site include a 6-colour, double-coater Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106 printing press and a Bobst EXPERTCUT 106 PER cutting machine. The machines are planned to be installed at the site in spring 2018.

Designed to produces a vast range of high-quality packs with optimum efficiency and economy, the Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106 printing press is said to offer wide range of configuration options in the 70x100 format class.

The Speedmaster press can be used in traditional commercial or packaging printing, in addition to label printing or web-to-print applications.

GPI intends to install the Bobst Expertcut 106 PER cutting machine to maximize productivity and cut down production costs. The machine has capacity to reach top speeds of 9,000 sheets per hour,

The EXPERTCUT 106 PER cutting machine is suitable for industries including packaging - folding carton, print finishing, label manufacture and tobacco applications.
