NIB to support BillerudKorsnäs' new board machine in Sweden

PKBR Staff Writer Published 12 March 2018

Nordic Investment bank (NIB) has agreed to provide SEK800m (€78.5m) to help finance part of BillerudKorsnäs' investment in a new board machine at its production site in Gruvön, Sweden.

The new board machine will be equipped to produce 550,000 tons of liquid packaging board, carton board, food service board and kraftliners, annually.

BillerudKorsnäs can take advantage of increasing demand in emerging markets with the increased production output.

The investment will create opportunities to streamline production and increase efficiency.

NIB president and CEO Henrik Normann said: “The investment will support BillerudKorsnäs in meeting its growth targets and strengthen the company’s position in Sweden’s pulp and paper cluster.

"The forestry sector is an important base industry in the Swedish economy, and it accounts for significant exports and employment.”

Planned to be commissioned in 2019, the new machine is expected to reach full production capacity by 2023. It will have a production speed of 1.200m/min.

In 2016, BillerudKorsnäs announced its plan to invest Skr5.7bn ($621m) to add a new board machine to meet the growing global demand for sustainable packaging solutions in the food and beverages industry.

At the Gruvön facility, BillerudKorsnäs manufactures a range of products including kraft paper, sack paper, liquid board, cup stock, market pulp and other corrugated products.

The facility comprises three pulp lines, six paper machines, a coating machine and two flash driers.

As part of the expansion project, BillerudKorsnäs awarded a contract to Valmet to supply advanced measurement and analyzer technology to the new board machine in Gruvön mill in January 2018.

Valmet will supply 36 online measurements, consistency transmitters and analyzers which are expected to boost the BillerudKorsnäs’ board machine quality.

BillerudKorsnäs is engaged in the production of renewable, fibre-based packaging products and solutions.

Employing approximately 4,300 people, the company also manufactures liquid packaging board and other cartonboard. It has production units in Sweden, Finland and the UK.
