Nordson EFD launches eco-friendly film-based dual cartridges

PKBR Staff Writer Published 07 June 2018

Nordson EFD has launched new Film-Pak sustainable film-based dual cartridges for two-component (2K) packaging and dispensing applications.

The new collapsible film-based technology enables to cut down packaging waste volume by over 85%, said the company.

When industrial fluids in Film-Pak are dispensed, the film packaging will be compressed into a uniquely-designed lid, which later turns into waste.

The entire cartridge becomes waste when conventional and rigid Side x Side dual cartridges are evacuated.

Seven compressed 1:1 ratio 600mL (300 x 300mL) Film-Pak cartridge lids are said to replace one standard 1:1 ratio 600mL (300 x 300mL) rigid cartridge in landfills.

According to the company, the Film-Pak is compatible with a range of standard two-component dispense guns and spray systems when using a reusable rigid retainer with integrated plungers.

The firm is also providing specially designed dispense guns with built-in Film-Pak retainers.

In addition, Film-Pak is compatible with a range of static mixers, including both spiral and square designs such as disposable square OptiMixer.

Film-Pak enables to reduce waste without disturbing shelf-life stability and ratio control.

Other benefits offered by Film-Pak include encapsulating inner film layers to prevent chemical degradation, advanced leak-proof bonding of film layers to the lid and inert film for streamlined fluid packaging inventory.

Nordson EFD fluid formulators and packagers business manager Peter Kuzyk said: “Fluid manufacturers and end users will benefit from the significant reduction in packaging waste, which leads to lower disposal costs.

“Perhaps more importantly, Film-Pak represents the future of sustainable fluid packaging in that it contributes to a lower carbon footprint, which supports corporate sustainability initiatives.”

Nordson EFD, which is a Nordson firm, is engaged in the designing and manufacturing of precision fluid dispensing systems for benchtop assembly processes and automated assembly lines.

The firm offers syringe barrels and cartridges for packaging one- and two-component materials, as well as different fittings, couplers and connectors for controlling fluid flow in medical, biopharmaceutical and industrial environments.
