Valmet selected to supply wet end rebuild for Sappi Gratkorn’s paper mill in Austria

PKBR Staff Writer Published 14 February 2018

Valmet has been awarded a contract to supply a wet end rebuild for installation at Sappi Gratkorn’s paper mill in Austria.

The rebuild, which is planned to be commissioned in 2019, is intended to improve paper machine (PM 9) efficiency, reliability and energy efficiency.

Under the contract, Valmet will be responsible for the supply of number of modifications to the paper machine wet end.

Valmet will rebuild the press section into an OptiPress Center with modern shoe press technology and the runnability components.

The OptiPress Center is designed to provide higher solids and better runnability. This result in reduced energy consumption and improved efficiency, Valmet said.

Valmet will also equip the off-machine coater with Valmet Water Jet Turn-up Device for fast parent roll changes.

Valmet senior paper technology manager Riikka Antikainen said: "Sappi has been relying firmly on Valmet in the past years.

“In addition to this new rebuild for Sappi Gratkorn, six other major ongoing or already started-up projects for Sappi are Valmet-supplied, the latest ones for Sappi Lanaken (start-up in 2019), Sappi Maastricht (2018), Sappi Sommerset (USA) (2018), Sappi Kirkniemi (start-up 2017) and Sappi Gratkorn PM 11 (2014).

“Our good OptiPress pressing technology references combined with the outcome of higher solids and better quality were success factors in this case, too.”

The PM 9 machine is designed to produce coated fine paper grades which have a design basis weight of 66g/m².

The Sappi’s mill in Austria is equipped to produce 980,000 of double and triple coated papers annually.

Belgium-based, Sappi Europe is engaged in producing and supplying coated fine paper, packaging and specialty papers.
